We are raising funds to purchase Digital Retina Scanners for early detection of diabetic retinopathy in people with diabetes. Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness worldwide, yet it often shows no symptoms until irreversible damage has occurred. Early detection using these scanners can prevent blindness and save sight.
Diabetic Retinopathy is caused by high blood sugar damaging the retina. Over time, ruptured blood vessels lead to repeated hemorrhages and scar tissue formation—often without any noticeable symptoms. As the scar tissue accumulates, vision can become impaired or even completely lost. Digital Retina Scanners can detect retinopathy early in diabetic patients, allowing ophthalmologists to perform laser treatments that halt the hemorrhages and preserve sight. Together, we can prevent vision loss
When an ophthalmologist examines your retina for retinopathy, your eyes must be dilated. However, with these digital retina scanners, dilation is not required. Once trained to use these scanners—also known as cameras—volunteer Lions Club members perform the examination. A photo is taken and forwarded to a volunteer ophthalmologist, who follows up with the patient if any abnormalities are detected.
Through your sponsorship, you're not only helping prevent vision loss from diabetic retinopathy in people with diabetes—you’re also positioning your brand in front of thousands of engaged donors across social media and other platforms.
Once volunteers are trained, Lions’ Clubs can immediately begin using these scanners. Currently, California Lions Friends In Sight hosts three vision screening events every month offering free eyeglasses, glaucoma tests, and other eye exams. However, these events do not include retinopathy screenings because the necessary scanners are not available.
Your support can make a difference! Help sponsor our World Diabetes Day Cycle For Sight on November 15 and play a vital role in preventing blindness caused by diabetes.
